Anchor & Magnet was an artists project based in Brixton and started by artist/curator Barby Asante, artist/academic Katy Beinart and artist/creative producer Kate Theophilus in 2012.

The name reflects a shared interest in place, identity, migration and belonging. Brixton is a place with a long-established and still evolving tradition of attracting migrant and peripheral communities: it is a magnet. It is also a place where incoming communities and individuals have established an often powerful sense of rootedness in relation to their locality, and have evolved identities informed by their new home: it has been an anchor. Anchor and Magnet's work is social and collaborative. We create spaces for dialogue, reflection and exchange and invite others to be part of the process. Over a period of 4 years we carried out a series of activities, made artworks and hosted events including The Brixton Exchange 1 and 2. All our events and activities are documented on the website.

Katy Beinart

Katy Beinart is an artist, writer and educator, whose work engages with the public realm and includes installation, public art, performance and socially engaged projects. She has exhibited internationally and created public realm projects for a range of organisations. Her work explores links between material culture, memory, migration, identity and place. Her recent projects and exhibitions include My Life is but a Weaving at Gunnersbury Museum (2018-19), Saltways (2017-18) for the Canal & River Trust, Fabric of Faith (2016-18) for UCL, Brixton Museum (part of Anchor & Magnet) (2015-16), Imagined Geographies (with Rebecca Beinart, 2015) for the National Trust, Goute Sel at the 3rd Ghetto Biennale Haiti (2013), and Saltworks at the Lisbon Architecture Triennal (2013).
