Stories of Shepherds Bush Market Traders in West London in 2016 during the proposed re-development.
In 2014, Shepherds Bush Market, a 106 year old market in West London was subject to a compulsory purchase order (CPO) by a property developer, Orion. The land was bought from Transport for London and the CPO pushed through by former communities security Eric Pickles. Orion had planned to build 200 luxury flats next to Shepherds Bush Market with no guarantees that the traders' leases would remain the same. Across 6 months in 2015, community artist Zain Dada worked with two local researchers (Sana Badri & Bushra Ferjani) and interviewed over 40 traders to get a sense of the traders' fears and hopes in the context of being displaced. Those insights were collated into an oral history pamphlet which was handed out to local residents and traders. The oral history pamphlet was launched at Bush Hall in West London with speakers including MP for Hammersmith and Fulham, Andy Slaughter, local Grime MC, Big Zuu, and members of the Shepherds Bush Market Tenants Association.
In the end, the Shepherds Bush Market Tenants Association were successful in their legal campaign against Orion Land & Leisure: https://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/top-judges-block-plans-for-luxury-flats-at-shepherd-s-bush-market-a3206851.html
