Being South Asian: Photography Workshops + Exhibition (2021—)

Call out for participants to be part of a unique opportunity to create, curate and collaborate in order to produce a new body of photographic work, which will be showcased at an exhibition at Gunnersbury Park museum in Summer 2021, exploring + celebrating South Asian heritage and culture.

Funded by University of the Arts, London: Chelsea, Camberwell, Wimbledon, this project will involve:
attending a series of 6 (1.5 hour) online (zoom) workshops . These will be held on Monday evenings from 6.30pm - 8pm;
produce new independent and collaborative photographic work for exhibition at Gunnersbury Park Museum in Summer 2021. The work you produce will also become part of the museum collection;
learn new skills including theory and practice, facilitated by a practicing artist plus visiting speakers. The sessions will be led by Artist and film maker Mahenderpal Sorya. Visiting artists/ speakers include Anand Chhabra (Photographer and Founder of BCVA: Black Country Visual Arts), Sat Sehmbey (Photographer and Musician) and Jennal Amin (Communities and Programme Officer, Gunnersbury Park Museum);
the project is shaped by you! You will be part of the process of making decisions about the themes/ topics of focus for the exhibition, including the title of the exhibition and presentation of work.
To take part, you must be: over 18, identify as South Asian and ideally live or work in the West London areas of Southall, Ealing, Hayes, Greenford, Brentford, Hounslow or neighbouring boroughs.
We are keen for the project to include members of the community local to the museum, however, if you are interested and live/ work outside of these areas please do still attend this meeting or get in touch.
No experience in photography necessary: beginners - professional welcome! No special access to equipment required either.
This is a free opportunity, there are no costs involved in taking part. Initial meeting on MONDAY 17th MAY, 18.30pm BST to find out more about the project, meet the facilitator and help decide if you would like to be part of it.
