Amplifying the voices of young peoples on the subject of visual literacy and media awareness.

Within the pages of this book produced by young people is a story made up of many different individual voices. The stories are told by young people themselves in their own unique ways. The book provides insights into the issues, concerns and experiences of young people as they chose to express and represent them. It contains the things that mean the most to them.

The texts include images, writings and drawings produced over a four-month period. It is sometimes said that children and young people present issues for society and communities: it may be that society, communities and adults present more issues for children and young people to overcome. It is clear that during this project young people care deeply about some of the issues shared by adults, share the same concerns, fears, joys, passions and difficulties, young people are working through the complex world that adults have created, and we can learn a great deal from them.

This project was funded by Media Box and a DCFES Cabinet Office research project to assess how the media and different levels of visual literacy impact on the lives of young people. This project empowers young people themselves to express their own concerns and voice.
